Running my first 5K

OK, I did it.

I signed up for a 5K. I haven't ran anything since I was a kid. I used to do a 10K run back then but I was seriously maybe 10 years old.

Fast forward a few years... *cough*... maybe add some more years...

I'm super motivated to have 2014 be my year to get fit... to be active... that includes trying running. Seems to me that attempting a race would be a good goal to work towards. Then I can call myself a runner right?

I've been working out on the Elliptical and doing some yoga (at home this winter). I've gone skating at our rink a few times and I've also been doing the workouts on Tone It Up. They're super great and easy to do (but challenging!).

As we move into spring though I'll need to amp up my training into something that will actually help me run! Snort... run... I must be crazy... But I have really cool new shoes, remember? I posted the picture the other day!

cool shoes!

So I was surfing around the blogs I follow and as I snooped through the Tone It Up website, I stumbled on this link... Get Ready to Train for Your First 5K.

Here is a plan I think I can do to get ready for my Run For The Girls 5K on April 12.

I'll have to start on March 3rd which is in just a few days. That part has me a little scared. It's cold outside. In fact this weekend is supposed to be the coldest of the winter yet (a balmy -55C with the wind). I am not going outside because I'll freeze solid in about 5 seconds. So I think the elliptical and I will be friendly for a little longer.

But as soon as it warms up... I'm heading outside!

I'll take -20C even... (never thought I'd be happy to go outside in that before this winter)...

Alright readers, wish me luck!

Right Now

Right now I’m…

LISTENING... to Slacker Radio, a lot... I really like that you can search your favorite artist and play stations based on their music, genre, etc... My favourites right now are Ellie Goulding, Florence and the Machines, Lorde,  and 30 Seconds to Mars... When I'm on the Elliptical I like their Dance Workout station too!

WATCHING... I'm a hit and miss TV watcher, mostly miss... I did catch some of the Olympics and they were fun to watch. I also watch Netflix. I watched a few good movies lately and a few bad ones... The good ones were Chasing Ice (documentary), Shaun of the Dead and Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy (both rewatches)

READING... Finishing up the Lord of the Rings second book, The Two Towers

KNITTING... finishing up WIPS, I seem to have lots of them all of a sudden. My Winter Wind scarf is so close to being finished, I can taste it. I have mittens that I want to finish too before winter is over... of course with the winter we've been having it'll never be over!

THINKING... of all the things I want to knit... I need more hours in the day or more arms...

COOKING... B got me some cookbooks for Valentines Day and one of them is a dinner salad book. I tried a recipe already this week and it was a hit. I have another on the menu for tonight. I'll let you know how it turns out.

WANTING... it to warm up! I'm so sick of the cold! It's -30 something every morning this week and no end for awhile. I want to be outside doing something in the sun. I want to be warm...

NEEDING… I don't really need anything right now. Isn't that a great thing!

FEELING... Grateful that it's Wednesday!

LOVING... My new running shoes!!! I was going to wait to buy them in April but I got birthday money from my inlaws (such lovely people) and I couldn't help myself!

PLANNING... to run some 5k races this spring. In fact I signed up for 2. The first is in Regina in April. It's a fun run for The Girl Guides and I'm happy to support them whenever I can. The second run is in May and it's a fundraiser too, for a centre of arts and learning in a little town south of us. It's claim to fame is the perogy lunch they feed you after the run. I like perogies!

WISHING For some extra time tonight to get an extra long yoga session in. I've been doing yoga at home every few days and love it. Especially at night before bed.

How about you? What are you doing right now?

February Goals

I thought I'd do a regular monthly posting of my goals (both knitting and personal) and then at the end of the month a post to weigh in on how I did.

I'm not so good at sticking to long term goals. Maybe by reducing them to smaller ones I'll actually accomplish something.

So...

February Goals

- knit a pair of socks and a shawl

- finish the Steven West Mystery Shawl from a few years ago and knit a pair of mittens for myself (all during the winter games on Ravelry)

- have 10 no-spend days this month

- make $250 in side hustles

- read 2 books, a personal finance book and something else (any suggestions?)

- work out 3 times a week (eliptical)  and 3 times weights (tone it up videos) - have you checked out Tone It Up yet? You should!

- blog once a week at least

How about you? Do you have monthly goals? Do they help you to achieve the bigger ones?
